What is compounding? Compounding is the preparation of customized medications prescribed by a licensed practitioner. Compounding can provide medications that are dye-free, preservative-free, sugar-free, alcohol-free, and lactose/gluten/wheat-free for patients with allergies or other sensitivities. Medications can even be made in different strengths and dosage forms, tailored specifically to meet the needs of the patient (or even pet!).
Orono Pharmacy is a Compounding Pharmacy Compounding is strictly regulated by the Maine State Board of Pharmacy. Using USP-grade chemicals supplied from FDA-approved drug manufacturers and specialized equipment not available in most pharmacies, we can compound medications in doses and dosage forms that are not commercially available. All of Peoples' compounding personnel are required to complete extensive classroom and hands-on training prior to preparing either sterile or non-sterile prescriptions. Peoples meets or exceeds all recommended USP 795 and USP 797 standards for compounding, actively participates in national continuing education, and attends forums for compounding standards updates.
